US designates Afghanistan as “state sponsor of wrongful detention”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that Afghanistan has been officially designated as a “state sponsor of wrongful detention,” according to a statement on the government’s official website.

The statement noted that the Taliban continues to use terrorist methods, abducting individuals for ransom or political concessions, practices that must be stopped. 

Rubio emphasised that travelling to Afghanistan is unsafe for Americans due to the risk of unjust detention of US and other foreign citizens and called on Taliban fighters to release previously detained Americans.
