US designates Iran-linked militia groups as terrorist organisations Details
The United States has announced that it is adding four Iraqi paramilitary groups linked to Iran to its list of foreign terrorist organisations.
"Today, the Department of State is designating Iran-aligned militia groups Harakat al-Nujaba, Kata’ib Sayyid al-Shuhada, Harakat Ansar Allah al-Awfiya, and Kata’ib al-Imam Ali as Foreign Terrorist Organizations," the Department's statement reads, per Caliber.Az.
The Department previously designated all four of these groups as Specially Designated Global Terrorists.
The list of terrorist groups already includes the Iraqi Kata'ib Hezbollah and Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq, which are also supported by Iran.
The State Department noted that the inclusion of organizations on the list leads to the freezing of their assets in the US and a ban on US citizens doing business with them. Parties cooperating with them risk becoming subject to secondary sanctions.
