US files narco-terrorism charges against Venezuela’s president

03 January 2026 17:20

US Attorney General Pamela Bondi has confirmed that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, have been charged in the Southern District of New York and are expected to stand trial in the United States.

According to the US Justice Department, cited by Caliber.Az, Maduro faces multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit narco-terrorism, possession of machine guns and explosive devices, and conspiracy to possess such weapons against the United States.

Bondi stated that both Maduro and his wife will soon be brought before a US court to face the charges.

The US attorney general also acknowledged the role of President Donald Trump and the US military, crediting them for what she described as a successful operation that resulted in the capture of two individuals accused of international drug trafficking.

The announcement followed reports of US military action in Venezuela during the early hours of January 3. US forces carried out strikes on several targets across the country, including military facilities. Residents in Caracas reported hearing explosions and experiencing temporary power outages during the operation.

President Donald Trump later stated that the United States had conducted a large-scale strike against Venezuela and confirmed the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife.

Trump has previously warned on multiple occasions that Washington was preparing new actions against alleged drug trafficking networks operating in Venezuela.
