US forces eliminate suspect sought in 1998 East African embassy bombings

The United States military has eliminated in Somalia one of the three individuals wanted in connection with the 1998 terrorist attacks on US embassies in Tanzania and Kenya.

The operation targeting suspected members of al-Qaeda was carried out in southern Somalia, Caliber.Az reports, citing Somali media.

A source within the Somali government said the strike was conducted by a US Air Force AC-130 aircraft using heavy automatic weapons.

Intelligence provided by US agencies indicated possible links between the killed individual and al-Qaeda.

On August 7, 1998, coordinated bombings at US embassies in Tanzania and Kenya killed more than 220 people and injured over 1,000.
