US, German defence giants successfully test new rocket launcher for global use

05 August 2025 15:32

American defence giant Lockheed Martin and German technology company Rheinmetall have successfully carried out the first live-fire test of their new Global Mobile Artillery Rocket System (GMARS), a high-tech rocket launcher designed for use by the United States and its allies.

The test, which took place at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, demonstrated the launcher’s ability to fire rockets already widely used by American and allied forces, highlighting its potential for international cooperation in future military operations, Caliber.Az reports, citing a statement by Lockheed.

The GMARS launcher is built to be fast-moving, reliable, and flexible on the battlefield. It can carry different types of missiles, including long-range and precision-guided rockets. The system is designed to work smoothly with weapons and vehicles already used by NATO countries, helping to strengthen joint military efforts.

“Lockheed Martin is committed to delivering innovative solutions that meet the evolving needs of our customers,” said Paula Hartley, vice president and general manager of Tactical Missiles at Lockheed Martin. “The GMARS program is a prime example of this commitment, and we are pleased to have successfully demonstrated its capability in this live fire exercise. With this milestone accomplished, we are poised to rapidly qualify and bring this capability to market.”

The launcher is built on a Rheinmetall vehicle platform and is compatible with other well-known systems like HIMARS and M270A2, which are already used by many NATO members. Its ability to fire both current and future missile types gives military forces more flexibility in various combat situations.

"We are thrilled to have achieved this major milestone in the GMARS program," said Dr. Björn Bernhard, CEO of Rheinmetall Vehicle Systems Europe. "The successful live fire showcases the system's precision and reliability, and we are confident that GMARS will meet the evolving needs of our customers."

The GMARS program is a joint effort between American defence giant Lockheed Martin and German technology company Rheinmetall. By combining their expertise, they have created a system that makes the most of proven technology while offering a modern, mobile solution for today’s battlefield. The new launcher offers the same missile capacity as older tracked models, but it is built on wheels, which makes it easier to transport and maintain, especially across Europe.
