US imposes sanctions on Muslim Brotherhood official, Hamas-linked entities

The US Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on a senior Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood official, three individuals and three entities accused of providing material support to Hamas.

According to the department, two of the designated entities are sham charities linked to the Muslim Brotherhood that channelled substantial funds to Hamas’s military wing, Caliber.Az reports per the Treasury Department's statement. 

“The Trump Administration will relentlessly pursue terrorists and those who finance them,” said Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent. “Whether operating under the guise of charities, businesses, or underground financial networks, those who enable Hamas will be exposed, sanctioned, and held accountable.”

The sanctions were imposed under Executive Order 13224, the US’ primary counterterrorism sanctions authority. The Treasury Department said the action was coordinated with the FBI, DEA and Customs and Border Protection and builds on previous measures targeting Hamas’ financial network and Muslim Brotherhood affiliates.

Earlier in January, the US designated branches of the Muslim Brotherhood in Lebanon, Egypt and Jordan as terrorist organisations.
