US invites Putin to G20 summit in Miami

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the United States invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to the G20 summit in Miami in December.

Rubio told reporters in New York that resolving international disputes requires dialogue with governments and leaders with whom Washington has serious disagreements.

He noted the summit would allow Putin to hold talks with the US president and other world leaders, and Washington hopes the Russian president will accept the invitation.

Rubio also said, "We remain open to engaging," while discussing the invitation after a meeting with Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

The US Secretary of State underlined that the G20 summit in Miami is scheduled for December 14-15, 2026, and he described the invitation as an opportunity for Putin to personally attend the meeting of the leaders of the Group of Twenty.

Putin’s attendance could create an opportunity for Putin to meet with US President Donald Trump if Putin attends the summit, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy could be among the participants.
