US, Lithuania to discuss regional security, air defence

21 August 2024 10:46

US Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall is set to meet Lithuanian National Defence Minister Laurynas Kasčiūnas in Vilnius on August 21, according to a statement released by the Lithuanian Defence Ministry.

This meeting, scheduled for August 21, marks an official visit by Secretary Kendall to Lithuania, highlighting the ongoing cooperation between the United States and its Baltic ally, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

During the visit, Kendall will engage in discussions with Kasčiūnas and representatives of the Lithuanian Armed Forces. The talks are expected to focus on several critical issues, including the regional security situation, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the perceived threat posed by Russia.

The agenda will also cover the US military presence in Lithuania, which is viewed as a key deterrent against Russian aggression in the region. Both leaders are expected to discuss the strengthening of air defence capabilities, military acquisitions, and broader strategies for ensuring the security of the Baltic region.

Lithuania, a NATO member since 2004, has been a focal point for US and NATO military presence in Eastern Europe, particularly since Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The Baltic states, including Lithuania, have consistently emphasized the need for a robust NATO presence to deter any potential aggression from Russia.

In recent years, the US has increased its military cooperation with Lithuania, including deploying rotational forces and conducting joint military exercises. The ongoing discussions between Kendall and Kasčiūnas underscore the importance of this partnership in maintaining stability in a region that remains on high alert due to geopolitical tensions.

This meeting is expected to reinforce the commitment of both nations to mutual defense and the broader goals of NATO in safeguarding the security of its member states in Eastern Europe.
