US: Multi-vehicle wreck in southern Colorado kills 4, injures 29

At least four people were killed and 29 others injured in a massive multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 25 in southern Colorado on the morning of February 17, authorities said.

The Colorado State Patrol reported that more than 30 vehicles, including six semitrailers, were involved in a pile-up on northbound I-25 near mile marker 94, between Stem Beach (exit 91) and Colorado 45 in Pueblo, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

The crash occurred around 10:02 a.m. local time. Troopers responding to the scene also found a secondary crash on the southbound lanes.

“Four people were confirmed dead, and 29 injured individuals were taken to hospitals,” the Colorado State Patrol said. Another 10 uninjured people remained at the scene. The Pueblo County Coroner’s Office will release the identities of the deceased once families have been notified.

Authorities cited heavy winds and low visibility from blowing dirt, creating “brownout” conditions, as factors contributing to the crash.

As of 2:35 p.m., the southbound lanes had reopened, but northbound I-25 remained closed “for an extended period” while cleanup and an investigation continued, according to state transportation officials. Drivers were advised to use alternate routes.

The total number of vehicles involved could not be immediately confirmed, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation, officials said.
