US Navy moves regional logistics hub to Diego Garcia

15 August 2026 13:06

The US Navy has shifted its main regional logistics operations to Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean following an Iranian attack on a US military facility in Bahrain.

The damage to the Bahrain facility reportedly disrupted supply operations supporting the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, prompting the US military to rely more heavily on the remote US-UK base, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

Bahrain and Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates have traditionally served as key resupply points for US aircraft carriers operating in the region. However, both locations are within range of Iranian missile systems, making them more vulnerable amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran.

Diego Garcia, located roughly 4,000 kilometres from Iran, offers a more remote alternative, although Iran could potentially retain the capability to target the facility.

According to sources cited in the reports, unidentified drones have also been observed flying over the joint US-British military base.

Diego Garcia hosts a major airfield that has supported US bombing operations for decades and plays a broader role in American military logistics. The facility also hosts US Space Force units, while its lagoon provides shelter for vessels operated by the US Military Sealift Command.

The base is additionally used as a port for US military vessels, including nuclear-powered submarines, making it a strategically important US military installation in the Indian Ocean.
