US observers hint at Elon Musk’s return to American domestic politics

24 January 2026 05:10

Elon Musk is reportedly preparing for a political comeback, albeit behind the scenes, after indicating several months ago that he would step back to focus on overseeing his business empire.

The tech billionaire’s political team is said to be meeting with prospective vendors ahead of the midterm elections for all of the House of Representatives seats that currently hold a slight Republican majority, according to reporting by the Wall Street Journal.

The publication reports that Musk’s efforts are centered on providing support through digital and text-messaging strategies. His top political strategist has been leading these initiatives, meeting with vendors, as well as some candidates and their teams.

Musk, the Tesla and SpaceX entrepreneur, had a public falling out with US President Donald Trump last year following Trump’s departure from the White House, where he had overseen the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a temporary federal initiative aimed at improving agency productivity and cutting excess regulations and spending. After a public exchange of criticism and insults, Musk appears to have partially restored relations with Trump, with the two recently seen speaking at several events.

The tech mogul signalled his renewed political interest by donating $10 million to the campaign of Republican Senate candidate Nate Morris in Kentucky. Morris, an entrepreneur and tech executive running on an “America First” platform, is competing against two other candidates to succeed retiring Senator Mitch McConnell. The candidate has been endorsed by multiple MAGA-aligned figures, though Trump has not yet weighed in.

This donation marks Musk’s largest publicly known contribution to a single candidate since the 2024 election, when he spent nearly $300 million supporting Trump and became the Republican Party’s largest donor.

Top Republicans, including Vice President JD Vance, have reportedly urged Musk to assist the GOP in defending its narrow majorities in the House and Senate, according to sources familiar with the discussions. Vance, who maintains close ties to Musk, did not respond to requests for comment.

Musk has also made substantial contributions to political committees backing Republican House and Senate leadership, known as super PACs, according to Federal Election Commission records cited by the WSJ.

“America is toast if the radical left wins,” Musk wrote on X earlier this month in reference to his contributions. “They will open the floodgates to illegal immigration and fraud. Won’t be America anymore.”
