US official questions Denmark’s right to control Greenland
US Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller has questioned Denmark’s right to exercise control over Greenland, arguing that the island should become part of the United States in order to safeguard Arctic security and NATO interests.
“What right does Denmark assert control over Greenland? What is the basis of their territorial claim? What is their basis of having Greenland as a colony of Denmark,” Miller said in an interview with CNN.
He suggested that the use of military force would not be necessary in such a scenario, noting that the island is home to only around 30,000 people.
Greenland was a Danish colony until 1953. In 2009, it was granted broad autonomy, including the right to self-govern and independently determine its domestic policies, while remaining part of the Kingdom of Denmark.
