US official says Greenland takeover only way to address security threats
Bringing Greenland under US control is currently the only way to address long-term security threats linked to the Danish autonomous territory, a senior US official said ahead of this week's NATO summit in Türkiye.
The official said President Donald Trump still believes that U.S. control of the strategically important Arctic island would best meet NATO's defence needs, Caliber.Az reports, citing Ukrainian media.
"We still believe that this is the best way to meet NATO's defence requirements for Greenland," the official noted.
Trump has previously openly threatened to take control of Greenland, straining relations with fellow NATO member Denmark and raising questions about unity within the alliance. He has argued that the Danish territory would otherwise remain vulnerable to Russia and China, posing a threat to US security interests.
The official said other options were also being considered but did not elaborate.
Pointing to intensified naval activity around Greenland, the official said Trump was seeking a long-term solution that would remain effective beyond the end of his presidency.
"At the moment, the only solution we have found to address this problem is for Greenland to join the United States," the official added.
