US prosecutors seek delay in Maduro court hearing to late July

16 June 2026 13:31

Federal prosecutors in the United States have asked a New York court to postpone the next procedural hearing in the case involving Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro from June 30 to  July 22 2026.

The request was filed with the US District Court for the Southern District of New York and was made with the consent of the defence, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

Prosecutors said the additional time is needed to disclose newly added case materials to the defence and allow legal teams sufficient time to review them ahead of the next stage of proceedings.

The case also involves Maduro’s wife, Cilia Flores, who is similarly named in the proceedings. Both defendants are reported to have denied the allegations related to drug trafficking.

On January 3, the United States carried out strikes on civilian and military targets in Venezuela and detained Maduro and his wife, later bringing them before a federal court in New York.

Those reports further claim the charges relate to alleged involvement in narcotics trafficking, with both defendants rejecting the accusations. The matter is said to be part of broader legal proceedings continuing in the Southern District of New York.
