US rules out use of force against Greenland, ambassador says

22 May 2026 09:49

The United States has ruled out the use of force against Greenland, with Washington emphasising that the island’s future must be determined by its own people.

“The president has taken the issue of using force off the table. The future of Greenland is something that Greenlanders themselves must decide,” US Ambassador to Denmark Ken Howery said, as quoted by Norwegian media outlet NRK.

Howery made the remarks during the official opening of a new US consulate in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. The move marks a significant upgrade in the US diplomatic presence, with operations relocating from a modest building near the harbor to a new 3,000-square-meter office space in central Nuuk.

The event, however, was marked by limited participation from Greenland’s political leadership. Several prominent figures chose not to attend the reception, including Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen. According to Greenlandic broadcaster KNR, no members of the current government were present.

Despite the absence of government officials, Vivian Motzfeldt, who until recently served as Greenland’s foreign minister, attended the opening. Explaining her decision, she said: “In any case, someone has to represent Greenland.”
