US Secretary of State discusses global situation during Vatican visit
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed the international situation during a visit to the Vatican and reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to working for peace, according to a Holy See statement.
In addition to an audience with Pope Leo XIV, which reportedly lasted more than 45 minutes, Rubio held talks with Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin.
The discussions included an exchange of views on regional and international affairs, with particular attention to conflict zones, areas of political tension, and complex humanitarian crises.
Both sides reaffirmed the need for continuous efforts toward peace.
The statement also noted the traditionally strong level of bilateral relations.
Italian media, however, highlighted that Rubio’s visit came amid efforts to ease tensions following critical remarks about the Pope by US President Donald Trump.
Parolin said he expected to discuss international political issues with Rubio, including Cuba and other global hotspots, stressing the Holy See’s position that conflicts cannot be resolved through force.
He also indicated that the Pope would be open to meeting the U.S. president if a request for direct dialogue were made.
