US secretary of state outlines military objectives against Iran

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on March 9 that the United States’ military mission in Iran is focused on destroying the country’s missile capabilities, including its missiles, launchers, production facilities, and naval assets.

Speaking at a State Department ceremony, Rubio emphasised that the mission is to "destroy the ability of this regime to launch missiles — both by destroying their missiles and their launchers — destroy the factories that make these missiles and destroy their navy," Caliber.Az reports.

“We are well on our way to achieving that objective” he said, adding that it is being done “with overwhelming force, with overwhelming precision.”

Rubio also labeled the Iranian government a terrorist regime and highlighted Tehran’s use of unlawful detentions of Americans as a tool of political leverage.

He noted that on February 27, the US officially designated Iran as a "state sponsor of unlawful detentions," marking the first time the designation has been applied. According to Rubio, Iran treats captured Americans as a commodity to be seized, exchanged, or used to exert pressure against US interests.

He said the United States is committed to stopping this cycle and ensuring that Iran cannot use detentions or military capabilities to threaten American security.
