US Secretary of State Rubio draws red line on Iran’s nuclear ambitions “Iran can never ⁠have a nuclear weapon”

Preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons remains the main objective of any potential negotiations, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, adding that Washington remains open to talks with Iranian representatives on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

No official meeting between the two sides has been scheduled so far, Rubio said in an interview with NBC’s “Today” show, while noting that Washington would consider such talks if they had the potential to produce a positive outcome.

“We're open to that. I ​don't think anything is scheduled ⁠at ⁠this point, ⁠but we're ​certainly open to something like ​that, especially ⁠if it has the prospects of leading to something ⁠positive and ultimately achieving the goal of ⁠what this is all about,” Rubio noted.

He then stressed that the central goal of any negotiations would be to ensure that Iran does not acquire a nuclear weapon.

“And that is the fact that Iran can never ⁠have a nuclear weapon. They just simply can't,” the US secretary of state said.
