US “semi-negotiating” with Iran as economic crisis grips Tehran – Trump

10 August 2026 08:36

The United States is only partially negotiating with Iran due to Tehran’s serious economic problems, US President Donald Trump said in an interview with Axios.

“We are only semi-negotiating with them. We are just watching Iran with its huge inflation and the fact they have no money,” the US president noted.

Trump also did not express any anger or frustration over Iran delaying an announcement on a deal with Oman to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. On August 8, Iran issued a new list of demands for allowing shipping through the strait.

He stressed that Iran “is in very bad shape” economically and lacks the money to pay its troops. The US naval blockade has further deepened the Iranian regime’s economic crisis, the American leader added.

At the same time, Trump emphasised that with oil prices falling to slightly above $75 a barrel, US consumers are feeling less impact from the war.

“It will work out. It always works out. It’s like a chess game,” Trump said, referring to the back-and-forth with Iran.
