US senator criticises Trump's Iran negotiators, calls for experienced diplomats

03 August 2026 09:23

US Democratic Senator Mark Kelly has criticised the Trump administration's handling of negotiations with Iran, arguing that President Donald Trump's current diplomatic team lacks the experience needed to resolve the conflict.

Speaking on CBS's Face the Nation on August 2, Kelly urged the president to replace special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who have led U.S. negotiations with Iran for months as the administration has sought to end a war it had expected to be short-lived, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.

Kelly argued that the administration should appoint seasoned diplomats capable of engaging with Iran and rebuilding international support for Washington's efforts.

"I would suggest to him, though, that the solution is not to do the same thing that he's been doing — not to have his real estate buddy and his son-in-law in charge of a negotiation,” Kelly said.

Instead, the Arizona senator called on the president to appoint experienced negotiators.

“Put some people in here that know how to do this, how to talk to the Iranians, and put a coalition together, bring our allies back together,” he said.
