US Senate to consider tough sanctions on India, China for buying Russian energy resources
US Senator Lindsey Graham has stated that the US Senate will soon consider a bill imposing “tough sanctions” not only against Russia but also against India and China, which purchase Russian energy resources.
“President Donald Trump is spot on about the games Putin is playing. The Senate will move soon on a tough sanctions bill – not only against Russia – but also against countries like China and India that buy Russian energy products that finance Putin’s war machine,” Caliber.Az quotes Graham as saying on X.
“The Senate bill has a presidential waiver to give President Trump maximum leverage. When it comes to Putin and those who support his war machine, it is time to change the game,”
Since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, India and China have become Russia’s largest energy buyers, with India purchasing 38% of Russia’s crude oil exports and seeing a 34% month-on-month surge in coal imports in May 2025. This has strained U.S.-India relations, as India has avoided publicly condemning Russia’s actions.
