Magnitude 6.4 earthquake hits waters off Japan

A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck the waters northwest of Japan’s Miyakojima Island early on Friday, July 3, according to the report by the Japan Meteorological Agency.
The tremor was recorded at 04:05 GMT, with a shallow focal depth, a factor that can increase the strength of ground shaking.
Seismic intensity reached level 3 on Japan’s seven-point scale on Kume Island, indicating moderate shaking.
The agency said the epicentre was located at 26.0 degrees north latitude and 125.8 degrees east longitude.
No tsunami warning was issued following the quake.
