US senators seek clarifications over sanctioned Russian delegation’s visit to Washington PHOTO

04 April 2026 12:01

US senators have demanded answers from senior officials over the visit of a sanctioned Russian delegation to Washington, raising questions about how entry restrictions were handled and what activities took place during the trip, journalist Ostap Yarysh wrote on X.

Jeanne Shaheen and Roger Wicker sent a letter to Marco Rubio and Scott Bessent seeking clarification on the circumstances surrounding sanctions waivers granted to members of the delegation, according to people familiar with the correspondence.

The senators questioned the legal and national security basis for allowing individuals under sanctions to enter the country, asking whether any limitations or conditions were attached to the waivers.

They also pressed officials on why sanctions relief was extended to facilitate the delegation’s aircraft landing at a US airport, and what security procedures were implemented upon arrival.

Among other requests, the lawmakers asked for a full list of all individuals who travelled from the Russian Federation, including a flight manifest, and whether counterintelligence vetting was conducted for each member of the delegation.

They also sought details on any meetings held between the visitors and US administration officials.

In their letter, the senators expressed concern about the purpose of the trip and its potential implications for US national security.

"The delegation came onto U.S. soil for one purpose: to advance the Kremlin’s strategic aims - including gathering additional useful intelligence. They did not come to engage in dialogue or in pursuit of democratic aims."

The inquiry comes amid heightened scrutiny in Washington over engagements involving Russian officials, particularly those subject to sanctions, as policymakers continue to balance diplomatic channels with security considerations.
