US sends new Abrams tanks to Poland, enhancing NATO’s eastern defence

Over 80 M1A2 Abrams tanks supplied by the US Army have been delivered to the Powidz military base in central Poland.

This deployment, which began in April 2023, also includes around 150 Bradley armoured personnel carriers and 20 M109 self-propelled guns, all of which were transported from American bases in Germany, Caliber.Az reports via Polish media.

The tanks that have arrived are the M1A2 SEP v3 models, the latest iteration of the Abrams series. These tanks are equipped with a redesigned turret featuring reinforced armour and advanced electronic systems, enhancing their combat capabilities.

The arrival of these US tanks at Powidz is part of a broader effort to bolster NATO’s eastern defences. The tanks will complement the Polish Army’s own fleet of Abrams tanks, reinforcing the overall military presence and readiness in the region.

According to the Global Firepower ranking, the Polish Army is ranked 20th among 145 classified armies from around the world. In terms of military power, Poland is ahead of Germany, Spain and Canada. Just above Poland in the ranking are Vietnam, Israel and Iran. The ranking is led by the US, followed by Russia and China.

In the ranking, Poland received high marks for the level of air force, transport and artillery.
