US sends Witkoff, Kushner to Paris for Ukraine peace talks

05 January 2026 20:38

President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner will represent the United States at talks on Ukraine in Paris this week, a White House official said on January 6, according to foreign media.

On December 31, French President Emmanuel Macron said that European leaders will meet in Paris to make firm commitments towards protecting Ukraine following any peace deal with Russia.

Macron has convened the meeting of the so-called ‘Coalition of the Willing’, a grouping led by Britain and France that includes more than 30 nations.

"On January 6 in Paris, many European states and allies will make concrete commitments to protect Ukraine and ensure a just and lasting peace on our European continent," Macron said.

U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff said that ways to strengthen security guarantees for Ukraine were discussed during talks between U.S. officials, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, and national security advisers from the UK, France and Germany.

In mid-December, European leaders, including Germany, France and Britain, noted “strong convergence” with the U.S. after talks in Berlin, outlining goals such as supporting Ukraine’s armed forces, a European-led peacekeeping force, and guarantees to use force if Ukraine came under attack again.

Kyiv has faced pressure from the Trump administration to make concessions to Russia, while European allies stress that any peace accord must include robust security guarantees backed by U.S. support.
