US set for first same-day triple execution in 16 years

Authorities in Tennessee, Alabama and Oklahoma are scheduled to carry out the executions of three inmates on August 13.

This will be the first time in nearly 16 years that three executions have been scheduled to take place in the United States on the same day. All three are set to be carried out by lethal injection, Caliber.Az reports via the Associated Press (AP).

Tennessee plans to execute Anthony Darrell Hines, who was convicted of murdering a housekeeper in 1985. In Alabama, the death sentence is scheduled to be carried out against Jeremy Williams, who was convicted of the rape and murder of a five-year-old girl. In Oklahoma, Carlos Cuesta-Rodriguez is scheduled to be executed after being found guilty of murdering his girlfriend in 2003.

The scheduling of three executions on the same day reflects a broader increase in the number of death sentences carried out in the United States, driven by several states that continue to actively use capital punishment. In 2025, 47 executions were carried out across the country, the highest figure since 2009.

The last time three executions were carried out on the same day was January 7, 2010, when inmates were put to death in Louisiana, Ohio and Texas. Three executions were also scheduled for the same day in 2018, but only one was ultimately carried out after a Texas inmate was granted a reprieve and prison officials in Alabama encountered problems with the IV line.
