US set to launch Project Freedom to escort ships trapped in Hormuz Strait

04 May 2026 08:31

The United States will begin an operation on May 4 to escort vessels stranded in the Strait of Hormuz due to the ongoing conflict, US President Donald Trump announced.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the operation, named “Project Freedom,” will aim to ensure the safe passage of commercial ships and their crews from the area.

He noted that many countries have expressed concern over vessels “trapped” in the strait and said US officials have been instructed to guarantee their safe exit.

“This process, Project Freedom, will begin Monday morning, Middle East time. I am fully aware that my Representatives are having very positive discussions with the Country of Iran, and that these discussions could lead to something very positive for all,” Trump wrote.

The American leader described the initiative as a humanitarian effort involving the United States, Middle Eastern countries and Iran.

"This is a Humanitarian gesture on behalf of the United States, Middle Eastern Countries but, in particular, the Country of Iran. Many of these Ships are running low on food, and everything else necessary for largescale crews to stay on board in a healthy and sanitary manner. I think it would go a long way in showing Goodwill on behalf of all of those who have been fighting so strenuously over the last number of months," Trump continued.

The president warned that any interference with the operation would be met with force if necessary.
