US shifts approach toward Europe, Finnish president warns
Finnish President Alexander Stubb has highlighted a changing dynamic in transatlantic relations, stating that the United States is now approaching its European allies differently.
“We must honestly acknowledge that the United States is going through a period of change. Their approach to allies is shifting, as is their method of conducting foreign policy. <…> The foreign policy of the current US administration is underpinned by an ideology that contradicts our values,” Stubb said, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
The Finnish leader noted that certain US actions appear to diminish Europe’s significance on the global stage. Despite this, he stressed that the United States remains an “important ally” for the European Union.
In response to evolving international circumstances, Stubb revealed that Helsinki plans to update key policy documents outlining Finland’s foreign and security policy. He added that the work has only just begun and did not provide a timeline for its completion.
