US students prevent potential school bus tragedy after driver loses consciousness

In Mississippi, a group of schoolchildren has been praised for stopping a school bus after the driver lost consciousness on a highway, potentially preventing a serious accident.

According to The Guardian, the incident occurred in the town of Kiln shortly after the bus departed Hancock middle school. The driver, Leah Taylor, suffered an asthma attack and lost consciousness while driving. The bus began to swerve on the road.

A sixth-grade student, Jackson Casnave, managed to grab the steering wheel, while his classmate Darrius Clark pressed the brakes.

Despite panic onboard, the students coordinated their actions. Thirteen-year-old Kayleigh Clark called 911 despite the noise and chaos inside the bus. Fifteen-year-old Destiny Cornelius used a nebulizer found with the driver, while 13-year-old McKenzy Finch supported the driver’s head and contacted the school district.

Emergency services arrived shortly after and provided assistance. Taylor later said her condition had stabilized.

At a school assembly, the students were recognized for their actions, while the driver said: “I’m gonna think of how they saved my life.”
