US to build two new power units at Khmelnytskyi NPP

The head of the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, Herman Galushchenko, said that by 2030 two new power units will be built at the Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plant using American technology.

The minister said in a televised marathon that it was decided to develop technical documentation for the construction of the new type of nuclear units on January 20, Anadolu Agency reports.

"Today is an important day in the field of nuclear power generation. Today, the government has put a full stop to cooperation with the Russian side in the field of nuclear energy. Before the full-scale war, we stopped all contracts to supply fuel from Russia, and today we have decided to develop the technical documentation for the construction of a new type of nuclear units. These are EP1000 reactors by the American company Westinghouse. These units will be built using American technology," the minister said.

He was talking about the construction of nine nuclear units at the Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plant. The contract to build five units was signed in 2021 in the USA between the Ukrainian government and the supplier company. Last year, the number of units planned for construction rose to nine.

"Our plans include the construction of two units by 2030. The average cost of building one unit is about $5 billion," Galushchenko said.

According to him, the construction will be carried out with loan funds from Westinghouse and at the expense of the state-owned enterprise Energoatom.
