US to revoke protective status for over 500,000 Latin American migrants granted under Biden

22 March 2025 15:22

The Trump administration has announced plans to revoke the temporary legal status of over 530,000 migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, which were admitted under a Biden-era sponsorship program.

The affected individuals have been instructed to leave the US before their permits expire on April 24, Caliber.Az reports citing Reuters.

The CHNV program, introduced in 2022, initially applied to Venezuelans before expanding to other nationalities. It allowed migrants with US sponsors to enter legally and stay for two years under a temporary status known as parole. The Biden administration implemented it to manage migration more effectively and reduce illegal crossings at the southern border.

After taking office, Trump suspended CHNV, arguing it failed in its objectives. As the article recalls, the Department of Homeland Security criticized the program, claiming it harmed American workers and contributed to fraud and crime. However, the Federal Register notice states that some migrants may be permitted to stay on a case-by-case basis.

It remains unclear how many affected migrants have secured alternative legal status. With the program's termination, hundreds of thousands now face uncertainty about their future in the US.

After assuming office, Trump moved to intensify immigration enforcement to deliver on his campaign promises, which includes beyond migrants arriving from Latin America.

On March 6, Trump stated that he would make a decision "very soon" on whether to revoke parole status for approximately 240,000 Ukrainians who sought refuge in the U.S. amid the war with Russia. His comments followed a previous Reuters report indicating that his administration was preparing to terminate their status as early as April.
