US, UK lead push for maritime security mission in Hormuz
Talks between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper focused on efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, according to the press release by the U.S. State Department.
The discussions took place ahead of a major international defence meeting aimed at addressing the protection of shipping through the key maritime corridor.
Approximately 40 defence ministers are expected to gather later on Tuesday, May 12, to discuss future security arrangements for the strait following the end of the war. The meeting is set to be co-chaired by UK Defence Secretary John Healey and his French counterpart Catherine Vautrin.
During the session, coalition partners are expected to outline potential military contributions to a future defensive maritime mission designed to safeguard commercial shipping in the region.
