US VP calls Iran truce “fragile”, urges diplomacy, backs Orbán in Budapest

08 April 2026 16:52

US Vice President J.D. Vance is visiting Budapest, where he has actively voiced support for Prime Minister Viktor Orbán ahead of Hungary’s parliamentary elections scheduled for April 12.

On April 8, during his visit, Vance met with Orban, addressed a press conference and a rally of Orban's supporters, and participated in a discussion organised by Mathias Corvinus Collegium, Caliber.Az reports, citing Polish media.

The US vice president urged Hungarian voters to participate in the elections and support Orbán, warning of interference by “Brussels bureaucrats” and threats from the European Union.

He emphasised that, despite their larger economies, few countries have contributed to conflict resolution at a level comparable to Hungary’s efforts.

Vance also commented on US and Israeli military actions against Iran, highlighting the “fragile” nature of the two-week truce and stressing the need for diplomatic engagement by Tehran.

He criticised European leaders for what he called insufficient efforts to end Russia’s war in Ukraine and described comments by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as “scandalous.”
