US wants Israel to end Gaza operation

The US believes that Israel's military operation in the Gaza Strip should end, but the Jewish state can continue to fight against senior Hamas leaders.

US officials are "sceptical of suggestions" that intensive Israeli operations could continue for another two months, let alone years, The New York Times reports.

Washington believes Israel should declare victory over Hamas and move on to a different kind of fight, namely the fight against the movement's senior leaders. Officials in the US told the publication that Israel has not and cannot destroy Hamas, but has made the likelihood of a repeat of the events of 7 October 2023 extremely low.
