US war in Iran costs $29 billion so far, Pentagon says
The United States’ war in Iran has cost $29 billion so far, a senior Pentagon official said on Tuesday, marking an increase of $4 billion from an estimate provided late last month.
The revised figure comes as the conflict feeds into a politically charged environment ahead of midterm elections, with President Donald Trump’s Republican Party facing mounting pressure to defend its handling of the war and its economic impact, Caliber.Az reports per British media.
According to the Pentagon, the previous estimate on April 29 placed total war spending at $25 billion.
Jules Hurst, performing the duties of comptroller, told lawmakers that the updated figure reflects additional costs tied to equipment replacement, repairs and ongoing operations, alongside broader battlefield expenditures. He appeared alongside Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine.
"The joint staff team and the comptroller team are constantly looking at that estimate," Hurst said.
The Pentagon did not fully explain the methodology behind the $29 billion calculation. A source said in March that the Trump administration had estimated the first six days of the war alone cost at least $11.3 billion.
