USAID closes office in Washington Trump agrees to shutdown

03 February 2025 20:53

Staff from the US Agency for International Development (USAID) reported that over 600 workers were locked out of the agency's computer systems overnight.

Those who remained logged in received emails informing them that, "at the direction of Agency leadership," the headquarters would be closed to personnel on February 3, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.

Elon Musk, leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), stated during an X spaces conversation that President Donald Trump had agreed with the decision to shut down USAID.

Musk confirmed that the shutdown process has already begun, comparing the agency to "a bowl of worms," in contrast to an apple tainted by a single worm.

"There is no apple," he said. "It's beyond repair."

Musk mentioned that as he has spent more time getting to know Trump, his appreciation for the president has grown.

"Frankly, I love the guy. He's great," the business tycoon said of the commander in chief. Musk has been heavily criticizing USAID in his posts on X.

"USAID is a criminal organization. Time for it to die," he tweeted.

"USAID was a viper’s nest of radical-left marxists who hate America," he asserted.

"We spent the weekend feeding USAID into the wood chipper. Could [have] gone to some great parties. Did that instead," Musk noted.

Elon Musk revealed in an X Spaces conversation early on February 3, that President Donald Trump is in agreement with the idea of shutting down the US Agency for International Development (USAID). The comments come after a period of speculation surrounding the future of the agency, which has been hit by a funding freeze and the suspension of dozens of its employees.

On February 2 evening, before Musk's comments, Trump responded to reporters' questions about USAID by saying: “It’s been run by a bunch of radical lunatics, and we’re getting them out, and then we’ll make a decision” on its future.
