Use of force in Greenland could split Trump’s team, sources say

22 January 2026 10:45

The prospect of using military force in Greenland could create divisions within U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, according to sources cited by Politico.

The report notes that the idea of exerting force over the island has received strong backing from White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, who asserted that the United States is the lawful owner of Greenland.

However, most senior officials in the administration viewed the threat as a means to gain leverage for potential negotiations over Greenland’s integration.

A source close to the White House told Politico that had Trump decided to deploy military force, it could have faced resistance from key allies such as Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President J.D. Vance.

“The takeaway for Europe is that standing up to him can work. There is relief, of course, that he’s taking military force off the table, but there is also an awareness that he could reverse himself,” a European official told the newspaper.

The official added that while Trump’s promises and statements are unreliable, his disdain for Europe is consistent, meaning European nations will need to continue demonstrating resolve and independence, and abandon any illusions about U.S. support.
