Uzbek president leaves for Karakalpakstan again due to unstable situation
President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev headed to the capital of Karakalpakstan, the Nukus city on July 3.
President Mirziyoyev was in Nukus, amidst riots on July 2, and returned at night, Russia’s Krasnaya Vesna reports referring to Flightradar24.
The situation is quiet in Nukus, there are almost no cars on the streets. Internet is still limited while mobile communication is working, according to Gazeta.uz sources.
The riots occurred amid residents’ dissatisfaction with the proposed amendments to the Constitution, which envisaged a change in the status of the region.
President Mirziyoyev said at a meeting in the Jokargy Kenes (parliament) of Karakalpakstan that the articles of the Basic Law relating to the republic will not be changed.
A state of emergency has been declared in Karakalpakstan since July 2 night. It was introduced for a period of one month.
