Maduro urges US citizens to prevent war with Venezuela
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro appealed to US citizens to prevent a war against his country in a broadcast on national television.
Maduro urged the American public to restrain the warmongers he claims are trying to provoke conflict to gain control of Venezuelan oil, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
He emphasised reliance on the responsibility and conscience of unions, political and religious leaders, and ordinary citizens in the United States.
Maduro also stated that many U.S. opinion leaders recognise the value of peace in the Americas and the need to respect Venezuela, which he described as a peaceful and law-abiding country.
His remarks came on the evening of December 15, the same day Alexander Shchetinin, Director of the Latin American Department at Russia’s Foreign Ministry, expressed support for Venezuela, saying the country faces “blatant political pressure and military blackmail” and highlighting that Moscow’s cooperation with Caracas is conducted under the strategic partnership agreement signed in May by the Russian and Venezuelan presidents.
The United States has deployed a large naval force, including aircraft carriers and warships, to the southern Caribbean as part of an expanded military posture near Venezuela, raising regional security concerns amid allegations of drug trafficking and political pressure on President Nicolás Maduro.
Washington has seized Venezuelan oil tankers subject to sanctions and expanded punitive measures against individuals and vessels tied to the Maduro government, actions Caracas condemns as economic warfare and violations of its sovereignty.
Venezuela’s government has called for international intervention, including appeals to the United Nations, to halt what it describes as US military harassment and threats to its territorial integrity.
Regional states like Trinidad and Tobago have approved US military aircraft access, reflecting broader geopolitical shifts and prompting Venezuela to denounce such cooperation as exacerbating tensions and undermining regional stability.
