Uzbek student killed in shooting at Brown University in US

An Uzbek student, Muhammad Aziz Umurzokov, was killed in a shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, the Uzbek Foreign Ministry confirmed.

According to a statement published on the ministry’s official Telegram channel, Tashkent expressed condolences to the victim’s family and relatives, per Caliber.Az.

“We extend our deep condolences to the family and loved ones of Uzbek student Muhammad Aziz Umurzokov, who was killed in the tragic shooting on the campus of Brown University. This tragedy, which claimed the lives of innocent people, is a heavy loss for all of us,” the statement said.

The ministry added that Uzbek diplomatic missions in the United States are in constant contact with the victim’s relatives and are closely cooperating with relevant U.S. authorities on all related matters.

Earlier reports said that the shooting at Brown University left at least two people dead and nine others injured, with the condition of eight victims described as critical.

On December 14, a person of interest was taken into custody in connection with the shooting, officials said.

Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez said limited details would be released on the detained suspect, but said he was in his 20s. The suspect was later named by US media outlets as Benjamin Erickson.

In a post on X, FBI director Kash Patel said the suspect was detained at a hotel in Coventry in the early hours of December 14 morning based on a lead from Providence Police.
