Violence erupts in Dhaka over unauthorized tribute to former PM’s father
Clashes broke out between supporters and opponents of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Hasina's supporters had planned an unauthorized demonstration to honor her father, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.
However, they were met with opposition from those against the event. The exact number of casualties has not been reported yet. Activists opposing the former prime minister detained at least ten of Hasina's supporters and handed them over to the police.
August 15 marks an annual commemoration in Bangladesh for Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Hasina’s father and the country's first president, who was killed in a 1975 coup. This year, the authorities had canceled the traditional procession.
In an effort to prevent the demonstration, students and other supporters of the current government barricaded the streets leading to the residence where Rahman and much of his family were killed.
