Volcanic unrest at Mount Etna halts arrivals at Sicily’s main airport
05 July 2026 18:06
Incoming flights have been suspended at Catania–Fontanarossa Airport in Sicily, Italy, due to renewed volcanic activity at Mount Etna.
The restrictions are expected to be reviewed later in the evening. Departures from Catania are continuing to operate and have not been canceled at this stage.
Mount Etna has been experiencing heightened activity since late June. According to Italian scientists, the volcano ejected an ash plume approximately 1.5 kilometers high on the morning of July 5.
Located on the eastern coast of Sicily, Etna is considered one of Europe’s most active volcanoes and erupts on a regular basis.
