Von der Leyen calls Germany’s nuclear phase-out “strategic mistake”
04 May 2026 08:48
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has described Germany’s decision to abandon nuclear energy as a strategic mistake, according to foreign media.
“Looking back, I believe Germany’s exit from nuclear power was a strategic error. If we are serious about tackling climate change, gas and coal are far worse than nuclear energy,” she said.
Von der Leyen added that nuclear power plants are necessary, particularly when renewable sources such as wind and solar cannot generate electricity due to weather conditions.
She emphasised that nuclear energy can provide stability in energy supply when “the sun is not shining, and the wind is not blowing.”
