Vučić says fast-track EU membership for Serbia “unlikely”
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said accelerated accession of Serbia to the European Union is unlikely under current conditions, citing political obstacles, following talks with Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Belgrade.
“Ukraine wants the fastest possible accession to the EU, and I told Zelenskyy that I understand all of this, but, as President of Serbia and a political veteran, I do not currently see an opportunity, above all, for the rapid accession of Serbia to the EU due to numerous political reasons,” Vučić said.
Serbia has been an official EU candidate since 2012 and has been engaged in accession negotiations since 2014. However, progress has stalled in recent years. In July 2026, Vučić voiced frustration that Belgrade had not opened a single new negotiation chapter over the previous five years.
