Warsaw says MiG-29 deal with Kyiv still under discussion

25 June 2026 17:16

Poland and Ukraine are continuing discussions over the potential transfer of MiG-29 fighter jets, with negotiations still ongoing and no final agreement reached, Polish Deputy Defence Minister Cezary Tomczyk, has said.

“The issue [of MiG-29s] is not closed; it is still under discussion,” Tomczyk said, Caliber.Az reports, citing Polish media.

“We are constantly exploring opportunities to finalise and conclude this agreement,” he added.

Tomczyk said the Ukrainian side had already inspected the aircraft and believes it could accept them, provided they are modernized. However, he stressed that Poland would not bear the cost of such upgrades. “We will not finance this ourselves,” he said.

Earlier, another deputy defence minister, Paweł Zalewski, also confirmed that Poland would not fund the modernization of its MiG-29 fighter jets for transfer to Ukraine.

In December 2025, Poland’s defence ministry announced plans to transfer between six and eight MiG-29 aircraft to Ukraine, which were scheduled for decommissioning by the end of 2025. In total, 14 aircraft of this type were expected to be withdrawn from the Polish Air Force.

However, on June 15, Tomczyk stated that Poland would not proceed with the transfer unless Kyiv granted Warsaw access to Ukrainian technologies related to drone production and counter-drone systems.
