Warsaw warns against ignoring Trump’s NATO withdrawal talk
Poland must take statements by Donald Trump about a potential US withdrawal from NATO seriously, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said in an interview with TVN24.
Sikorski emphasised that such remarks cannot be dismissed, warning that political statements can carry real consequences. “There is always first a word, and then sometimes the word becomes flesh,” he said. “President Trump also promised union with Canada and Greenland, but this has not happened yet.”
“We must take Trump’s words about [withdrawing from] NATO seriously,” Sikorski added. “We want to be a good and loyal ally of the United States, but we cannot pretend that the US president did not say what he said.”
He noted that Poland requires “two insurance policies,” indicating the need to consider alternative strategic options alongside its alliance with the United States.
