Washington calls on Iraq to confront Iran-backed militias
The United States has urged Iraq to take urgent action against militias it says are linked to Iran, warning that continued attacks on infrastructure and facilities of international importance risk further destabilising the country.
According to comments provided to Shafaq News by a spokesperson for the US Department of State, Washington strongly condemns the recent strikes targeting infrastructure in Iraq, including in the autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan region.
The spokesperson said the US attributes the attacks to Iran and to armed groups operating under Tehran’s influence. Washington warned that continued strikes against infrastructure and facilities considered to be of international interest could deepen instability in Iraq.
The United States called on Iraqi authorities to take immediate steps to address the activities of these militias and prevent further attacks.
