Which American goods could face EU sanctions? Eurostat data

01 April 2025 12:14

The European Union is set to impose retaliatory tariffs in mid-April this year in response to similar measures introduced by the United States. However, these tariffs could affect the supply of American whiskey and aircraft black boxes in the EU, as their imports heavily rely on the US.

According to Eurostat data, cited by foreign media, the US introduced a 25% tariff on aluminum and steel imports in March, applying it to all countries, Caliber.Az reports.

The European Union, one of the largest suppliers of these metals to the US, announced countermeasures, including tariffs on goods worth €26 billion. Initially, the EU planned to implement the measures in two stages, but decided to synchronize them and move the start date to mid-April.

These measures could significantly impact certain imports to the EU, as they heavily depend on US supplies. For example, in 2024, the EU imported 99% of its bourbon (American whiskey) in containers larger than 2 liters (worth €129 million), 97% of bourbon in containers smaller than 2 liters (€217.9 million), and 69% of other types of whiskey (€226.9 million) from the US.

Moreover, 88% of the black boxes for aircraft purchased by the EU came from the US, amounting to €32.2 million in 2024.

The EU is also heavily reliant on US imports for aircraft and other flying machines weighing over 15 tons. In 2024, 73% of their purchases, or €10.9 billion, were from the US, with EU buying only fighter jets from the States.

Other US products at risk of EU tariffs include alloy steel bars (68% of EU imports, €43 million), yachts and kayaks for leisure (67%, €68 million), vodka in containers under 2 liters (67%, €137 million), single-bucket tracked loaders (65%, €98 million), and certain types of rum (62%, €168 million).

Additionally, rearview mirrors for vehicles are another US product that could be affected, with the US supplying 60% of the EU’s imports in this category, worth €491 million. Other goods include vodka in containers over 2 liters (60%, €11 million) and nuts (53%, €2.4 billion).
