White House links attempt on Trump to “systematic demonisation”
The White House has said that recent attempts on the life of US President Donald Trump are the result of what it described as the “systematic demonisation” of the president and his supporters.
Speaking at a press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt argued that the current climate of political violence in the United States is being fuelled by rhetoric from political opponents and sections of the media.
“Nobody in recent years has faced more bullets and more violence than President Trump. This political violence stems from a systemic demonisation of him and his supporters by commentators, yes, by elected members of the Democrat party and even some in the media,” Leavitt said. She added that increasingly heated rhetoric by critics of the Republican leader contributes to legitimising political violence in the country.
Leavitt also confirmed that the US government is treating the April 25 incident in Washington, D.C., as a new attempt on the president’s life.
