WHO calls for urgent response to monkeypox

02 July 2022 10:23

World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Europe Hans Kluge called on governments to intensify their fight against the spread of monkeypox.

“Urgent and coordinated action is needed if we are to turn the tide and reverse the ongoing spread of this disease,” Gazeta.Ru quotes him as saying.

According to his data, the European region of the organization accounts for almost 90% of all laboratory-confirmed and reported cases worldwide since mid-May, and the number of cases has tripled since mid-June and reached more than 4,500.

A team of researchers at the National Institute of Health Doutor Ricardo Jorge in Portugal have found that the monkeypox virus evolves 6 to 12 rate faster than expected. Researchers believe monkeypox's rapid mutation may be due to interactions with immune enzymes such as APOBEC3, which kill viruses by creating errors in copying the genetic code.
